MUSIC DIRECTOR
Classically trained in the early part of his music education, Felix Phang learnt a variety of instruments, such as the violin, trombone and the double bass. It began with a fascination in the sounds these instruments make, and when Felix mastered them it developed into a deep passion in musical composition.
It is not too far-fetched to consider Felix as something of a musical virtuoso. After graduating in Jazz Composition from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in 2008, he has been exploring and creating music via technology. Equally proficient in both the classical and modern, performance and ararngement, Felix has a long list of achievements in what is only the beginning of his musical career.
He is sound designer and musical director in an experimental audio-visual trio PMP; arranger/band leader of a steel drump group, JuzSteel; and instructor of Jazz Nuts Big Band. In addition, Felix also leads Motif Music, a team of Berklee graduates providing musical composition services internationally.
Currently, Felix composes and teaches the double bass in the bands of Yuhua Secondary School, River Valley High School and Victoria School. He also performs as an upright bass player. He has worked with the Jerry Seeco Big Band in Berklee, Berklee Repertory Orchestra, Berklee String Orchestra; and in Singapore, the Summertimes Big Band, Thomson Big Band, Sparkswinds and Tamagoh (drums). Past performance venues include Victoria Concert Hall, Esplanade, Young Musicians’ Society, Barstop, Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Shangri-La Hotel, Orchard Central, Paragon, Suntec City and Tangs, to name a few.
2010 begins with a slew of new musical endeavours and responsibilities for Felix. Having served as managing director of High Notes Publishing, he now takes on creative direction for High Notes, as well as music direction for the Summertimes Big Band. All these leadership positions, and his mastery of the violin, make Felix the ideal candidate as the artiste-endorder of The Violin Gallery, a recently launched purveyor of quality violins in Singapore.
